Grady Judd, Tampa Bay public safety leaders sound alarm over Amendment 3

More than 40 Sheriffs, Police Chiefs and firefighters gathered in Tampa to warn that the proposed property tax cuts could jeopardize emergency services. Florida public safety leaders are urging voters to reject Amendment 3, which would increase Florida’s homestead exemption for non-school property taxes to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 by 2028. The measure is estimated to reduce local government revenue by nearly $5 billion in its first year and nearly $8.8 billion the following year. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd and Florida Professional Firefighters President Wayne "Bernie" Bernoska warned that public safety departments still need reliable funding to maintain staffing, equipment and emergency response capabilities. The amendment does not guarantee a minimum funding level for police, fire or emergency medical services. Supporters argue that the tax cuts would provide meaningful relief to homeowners struggling with rising costs.
