Florida Reports Dozens More Cases of Mosquito-Borne Dengue Virus
The vast majority of cases were reported in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, this year. Florida has reported dozens of new cases of dengue fever, a virus transmitted by infected mosquitoes, according to a new update from the state health department. The majority of these cases were reported in Hillsborough County, which includes the city of Tampa. The total of 425 locally acquired cases have been recorded so far in 2026. These cases, along with 20 mosquito pools, have been reported in 11 counties in the state. The most recent data from the Florida Department of Health reported 57 cases of locally acquired dengues for the week of Oct. 11 to Oct. 17. Since there is no specific treatment for dengued, the main focus is dealing with pain symptoms. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends avoiding non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs due to their risk of bleeding.
