Amendment 3 could change your property tax bill, Tampa Bay. Here’s how
Florida voters will soon decide on a sweeping ballot amendment that could reshape the state’s property tax system. Much has been made of the threats looming over local government budgets. Amendment 3, a ballot amendment that could reshape Florida's property tax system, could result in significant savings on property tax bills. The proposal, approved by the Republican-led Legislature, aims to make homeownership more affordable amid soaring prices. If approved by 60% of voters next month, it would triple the current $50,000 homestead exemption on primary residences and raise it to $250,000 in 2028, among other changes. Local leaders have warned that the amendment could trigger budget cuts, reduce services like park maintenance and youth programming, and lead to increased fees. However, individual homeowners could save thousands on their property tax bill due to a range of factors such as where, the assessed value of your home and how long you have claimed a homestead exempt.
