Polk County passenger rail study: Leaders evaluate station options

Local transportation leaders are taking steps to expand high-speed train service west toward Tampa by launching a new station location study in Polk County. The Polk Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) is leading a station location study in Polk County, looking at potential locations for high-speed train stops. The study, which aims to narrow down to three to five stops, will provide county officials with data-driven options for future rail providers. The TPO Executive Director, Ryan Kordek, noted that high-speeding rail could provide a reliable public transportation service that could reach Tampa, Orlando, or possible connections to SunRail. The exact cost of building station infrastructure in Polk has not yet been determined. Transportation planners are asking local residents to participate in an online survey regarding their personal travel needs and station priorities.
