Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, police chiefs, fire chiefs and firefighters gathered in Tampa on Monday to warn that Amendment 3, a proposed property tax amendment, could strain local government budgets and make it harder to maintain emergency services as communities grow. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, police chiefs, fire chiefs and firefighters have voiced concerns about Amendment 3, a proposed property tax amendment that could strain local government budgets and make it harder to maintain emergency services as communities grow. The proposal would increase the homestead exemption for qualifying homeowners on non-school property taxes from $50,000 to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 by 2028. It would limit annual increases in assessed values for non-residential properties to 5%, down from 10%. The proposal requires counties and municipalities to use remaining property tax revenue for public safety, education, natural resources, bond obligations, employee retirement benefits and government operations and administration. Critics argue that the amendment does not establish a minimum funding level for police, fire and emergency medical services.
