Port Tampa Bay channel deepening advances with engineering work
Soil testing will guide design of the port’s generational infrastructure project, intended to lower transportation costs and improve the flow of goods throughout West Central Florida. Port Tampa Bay's plan to deepen its shipping channel has reached another engineering milestone, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers beginning testing soil beneath the waterway before dredging begins. This is part of an estimated $1.2 billion to $1.5 billion effort to widen the port's main stem channel from 43 feet to 47 feet to accommodate larger vessels carrying more cargo per trip. The project, authorized by Congress in 2024, is expected to be completed by the start of the 2028 fiscal year. The deeper channel could improve shipping efficiency for fuel, construction materials, steel, automobiles, and consumer goods, as well as reduce the number of vessel calls needed to transport the same volume of cargo.
