Tampa International Airport prepares for hurricane season

Tampa Bay could be in for an active hurricane season this year, and Tampa International Airport is already taking steps to stay prepared. Tampa International Airport (TPA) is preparing for the upcoming hurricane season, which begins in June. The National Weather Service predicts that the prediction will be double the category three or four or five category category hurricanes predicted this year. TPA officials are urging people to prepare for the potential storm. Last year, TPA closed ahead of hurricane Idalia, which caused significant damage and disruption, but opened the following day. The airport is always open to military aircraft and life-saving flights during the worst of storms.

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tampa Bay could be in for an active hurricane season this year, and Tampa International Airport is already taking steps to stay prepared.

As we edge close to summer, many people are starting to look forward to their summer vacations whether it’s in the Sunshine State or flying out of Florida.

“I often travel to San Diego. Different places, it can be scary sometimes,” traveler Noah Goldenberg said.

However, many overlook the fact hurricane season begins in June.

TPA officials are in the center of the airport informing people to be storm-ready.

“Tropical storms come every single year and about seven hurricanes and about four of them become major hurricanes, which is category three or four or five. This year’s prediction is actually to see almost double that,” meteorologist for the National Weather Brian LaMarre said.

Last August, TPA closed ahead of hurricane Idalia, a storm that caused damage along the Gulf Coast, but caused also travel disruptions.

“The decision to suspend operations is one that we do not take lightly,” John Tiliacos at Tampa International Airport said. “We’ll only suspend flight operations if we believe forecasted weather conditions will be unsafe and in that case, we don’t want any aircraft or passengers anywhere near the airport.”

TPA was able to open the following day, marking the importance of preparing for worst-case scenarios.

“The airport really never closes. It’s a critical infrastructure. Even during the worst of storms, it is always open to military aircraft to life safety flights,” Tiliacos said.
