Chris Braswell signs his first NFL contract with Buccaneers

The former Alabama linebacker was a second-round choice in this year’s draft. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have announced that linebacker Chris Braswell has signed his first NFL contract with the team. The Buccaneers chose Braswell from Alabama with the 57th selection in the NFL Draft, earning him a four-year contract worth about $6.785 million. The signing comes with values based on the draft number, the NFL's salary cap of $255.4 million for the 2024 season, and this year's rookie compensation pool. Only one of the 10 players selected from Alabama in the 2024 NFL Draft still not yet under contract from the draft, Dallas Turner, who was picked at No. 17 by the Minnesota Vikings. Braswell joins an outside-linebacker depth chart that includes Yaya Diaby, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, and Randy Gregory.

Linebacker Chris Braswell has signed his first NFL contract, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced on Wednesday.

The Buccaneers chose Braswell from Alabama with the 57th selection in the NFL Draft on April 26.

That draft slot comes with a four-year contract worth about $6.785 million.

All drafted players receive four-year contracts. The values of those contracts are based on the pick number, the NFL’s salary cap of $255.4 million for the 2024 season and this year’s rookie compensation pool in a formula spelled out in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and its players association.

With Braswell’s signing, only one of the 10 players selected from Alabama in the 2024 NFL Draft has not signed his first contract – linebacker Dallas Turner, picked at No. 17 by the Minnesota Vikings. Turner is also the only one of the 27 prospects selected in this year’s draft who played at Alabama high schools and colleges not yet under contract.

Tampa Bay is seeking to beef up its pass rush after releasing Shaquil Barrett this offseason. Barrett led the NFL with 19.5 sacks in 2019, but he recorded 4.5 in 2023 and was let go in a salary-cap move in March.

Braswell joined an outside-linebacker depth chart that included Yaya Diaby, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and Randy Gregory. Diaby led the Buccaneers with 7.5 sacks as a rookie in 2023. Tryon-Shoyinka had five sacks in 12 starts last season. Former second-round pick Gregory has joined Tampa Bay for his eighth NFL season.

Braswell recorded eight sacks for Alabama in 2023.

“When the shoulder pads come on, we’ll see,” Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles said about Braswell’s prospects after practice on Tuesday. “But he’s very tough, he’s very steady, he has a very strong lower body. He has semblances of Yaya from last year as far as raw strength. We’ll see when the pads come on how that translates, but I like what I see so far.”

Braswell signed on the final day of the Buccaneers’ offseason program. The team will gather again from training camp late next month.
