AUBURNDALE, Fla. (WFLA) — Jacquelinie Nichols said her 5-year-old daughter, Madeline, always had two things on her mind: ice cream and starting school.

“She was so excited to start kindergarten,” Jacquelinie said. “That’s all she would talk everybody’s ear off.”

It’s a dream Madeline will never get to experience, all because of an alleged drunken driver.

“Somebody’s bad decision took away my 5-year-old child,” Jacquelinie said. “All I want to do is hug her and hold her.”

Jacqueline was released from the hospital Monday, after what she’s calling the scariest night of her life.

“We picked up Justin from work, we headed to Taco Bell,” Jacquelinie said. “I was leaving the drive thru, Maddie was asking for her fries and that’s it.”

The next thing she remembers is waking up in the hospital, grappling with the news that not only were both Jacquelinie and her fiancé Justin Jones seriously injured in a crash, but their 5-year-old little girl was gone.

“It was very surreal,” Jacquelinie said. “I was sitting there asking, ‘Where’s Justin, where’s Maddie?”

Sheriff Grady Judd said 24-year-old Robert Harrison was driving under the influence when he hit Jacquelinie’s car head on.

It was that one decision to drink and drive that Judd said cost this little girl the rest of her life.

“All I want to know is, why?” Jacquelinie said. “I know you have a phone, everyone has a cell phone.”

“Call someone,” she said. “Why didn’t you call somebody?”

“We have to suffer through his bad decision for the rest of our lives, and we’ll never be able to grasp it,” Jacquelinie said. “She was only 5.”

Jacqueline told News Channel 8 that Madeline’s dad, Justin, underwent surgery and was still in the hospital at the time this article was written.

As for Harrison, he was given no bond on his DUI Manslaughter charge, so he will remain in jail until his pretrial detention hearing Thursday.
