BayCare Health System unveiled construction plans for a planned new $548 million hospital, its first in Manatee County.

The 154-bed facility is planned for Moccasin Wallow Road in the fast-growing area north of the I-75 and I-275 intersection, putting it within reach of residents in southern Pinellas County.

BayCare Hospital Manatee will include an emergency room and facilities for orthopedic and specialty surgery, urology, gastroenterology, cardiology, diagnostic and interventional imaging, obstetrics, and neonatology, according to a news release. Plans also include a 45,000-square-foot building with out-patient services and offices for physicians.

Construction is scheduled to begin in October.

“At BayCare, our mission is to serve the community’s health and we are so excited to be deepening our commitment to the residents of Manatee County,” said Stephanie Conners, BayCare president and CEO in a statement. “As West Central Florida continues to grow and thrive, we are committed to investing in our communities to bringing high-quality and compassionate care closer to our communities.”

The new hospital would be the first in the county to be built north of the Manatee River, where cow pastures and orange groves have been replaced by subdivisions over the past two decades.

It would also be Manatee’s first nonprofit-owned hospital. Manatee Memorial Hospital and Lakewood Ranch Medical Center are owned by Universal Health Services while HCA Blake Hospital in Bradenton is part of the HCA Health Care hospital chain.

BayCare officials said the hospital is another sign of its commitment to meet the needs of fast-growing communities in and around Tampa Bay. The nonprofit opened its 16th hospital in Wesley Chapel in March 2023 and is close to finishing a replacement South Florida Baptist Hospital in Plant City, which is set to open later this year.
