LAKELAND, Fla. — Polk County is getting closer to officially launching passenger flights from Lakeland International Airport (LAL) for the first time in 12 years.

Through a partnership with the low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines, airport leaders will unveil the new routes out of LAL during a press conference at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

The return of commercial service to Lakeland was made official in December after city commissioners approved the move, something that was required as the city owns and operates the airport.

It's technically the first commercial airline out of LAL in 35 years, with the last passenger service being a charter company that went bankrupt 12 years ago.

Last week during a city commission meeting, Avelo Airlines said they were waiting on security clearances from TSA before they could move forward with implementing operations. During that same meeting, commissioners approved a plan to expand the airport's campus by adding an additional runway and potentially a new terminal.

10 Tampa Bay will be at the press conference and will update this story with the official announcement of routes.
